Love schoolloop, I was part of the pilot project when I taught at Demille Middle School but then they took it away from us and said that they were going to have to study it further. I think Millikan HS was part of the remaining pilot.
SchoolLoop is definitely a CMS, with, like you said, hints of social networking. I don't remember, can students create their own groups and/or enroll in groups? If they can customize their groups and the configuration of their dashboard, then it does have elements of a PLE. But just having a calendar and email still is someone analogous to "normal" course management and therefore completely within the restrictions of a CMS. Great conversation.
